Trip Overview
Kathmandu Durbar Square, Bhaktapur Durbar Square, and Patan Durbar Square are the most historic royal palaces from 18th century from Malla kings, who ruled the Kathmandu Valley from the 12th to the 18th century. Kathmandu Durbar Square was the seat of the Malla kings before it became the capital of Nepal, with the Hanuman Dhoka Palace and the iconic Taleju Temple symbolizing its grandeur. Bhaktapur Durbar Square, the best-preserved of the three, was the seat of the Bhaktapur Malla kings and boasts impressive temples like Vatsala Temple and the 55-Window Palace. Patan Durbar Square, home to the Malla kings of Patan, is renowned for its beautiful architecture and the Hiranya Varna Mahavihar (Golden Temple).
The history of these three squares is intricately connected through their shared Malla heritage and competition for power and influence in the Kathmandu Valley. Each palace complex served as the administrative and cultural hub of its respective kingdom, with vibrant festivals and artistic developments thriving within their walls. The architectural styles, including pagoda-roofed temples, intricate wood carvings, and royal courtyards, reflect a deep connection among them, highlighting the cultural unity of the Newar people. Today, these squares stand as UNESCO World Heritage Sites, preserving the rich history of Nepal’s royal past and architectural brilliance.
