Trip Over view

Kanchenjunga base camp trek is still a less tourist visited destination and lies in the eastern part of the Nepal border with India and China. this massive Kanchenjunga is the world’s third-highest mountain at 8586 meters high from sea level that you can witness to touch base camp at 5140 meters on this trip.

Kanchenjunga north base camp is inside the Kanchenjunga conservation area, which is very rich in biodiversity, flowers and fauna; Rai, Limbu, Sherpa culture and Buddhist religions. similarly, Kanchenjunga conservation area is popular for snow leopard, blue ship, Himalayan red fox and many different species of birds.

The Kanchenjunga base camp trek starts by flying from Kathmandu to Bahadur airport. The 297km air distance takes almost 45 minutes flights and Birtamod to Sekathum is 240km by private jeep.

Then the official trek starts from Sekathum towards Kanchenjunga north base camp, about 54km, Trekking distance following Ghunsa Khola, walking through subtropical forest up to the Nival zone to reach base camp.

Kanchenjunga trek cost is USD 1705 to 3285 per person including Kathmandu - Bhadrapur - Kathmandu domestic flights, Bhadrapur-Taplejung-Sekathum-Birtamod private jeep, Kanchenjunga restricted permit, KCA fee, TIMS, accommodation and foods, guide and porter during the trek.

October to Half December in Autumn and March to end of May is the best time to go Kanchenjunga base camp trek. other time of the year is either too cold or rainy.

Itineraries

Day 01

Arrival in Kathmandu 1370 meter

A representative from Guide for Nepal Pvt Ltd will heartily welcome to you in Tribhuvan international (TIA) airport 1370 meter from sea level in any time of your arrival and help you transfer to hotel at Thamel. Kathmandu is capital city of Nepal and it is normally busy during the day. It is about 15-25 minutes’ drive from airport to Thamel. It depends on your arrival time and traffic. You might have short time to visit some place in Kathmandu and final preparation for Trip from next day.

Day 02

Kathmandu - Bhadrapur - Phidim 1200 meter

The Kathmandu to Bahadur flight starts from around 8–9 am and it takes about 45 minutes. Then Bahadur to Phidim is another 5–6-hour drive by local private jeep.

Day 3

Phidim-Taplejung-Sekathum 1650 meter

Phidim to Sekathum is almost 7–8 hours away and some off-road drive. It depends on local rules and the current situation there in Taplejung that sometime we can take the same jeep direct or need to change another jeep from Taplejung to Sekathum, the small place Sekathum is located at 1650 meters above sea level on the river bank of Ghunsa Khola.

Day 4

Sekathum-Amjilasa 2490 meter

Sekathum to Amjilasa is about 4–5 hours trek gradually and some step uphill walking through some mixed forest following Ghunsa Khola, ascending almost 840 meters. Amjilasa is a small village situated at 2490 meters above sea level on a hillside on the way to Kanchenjunga trail.

Day 5

Amjilasa-Gyabla 2725 meter

Amjilasa to Gyabla is quite a short- and easy-day trek, ascending a few hundred meters gradually uphill, some normal flat and some uphill walking through hillside near Ghunsa kola. Gyabla is situated at 2725 meters.

Day 6

Gyabla-Ghunsa village 3415 meter

Gyabla to Ghunsa village is an extremely beautiful hike, passing some mixed forest including pine trees and Rhododendron flowers which bloom during spring. Fole gaun is a small village on the way where is the best time to have a lunch break, then trek a few hours more to reach Ghunsa village at 3415 meters. Ghunsa village is the last biggest village in Kanchenjunga north base camp trek

Day 7

Acclimatization day

Explore Ghunsa village and make few hours hike nearby before lunch and take a rest.

Day 8

Ghunsa-Khambachen 4145 meter

The trek from Ghunsa to Khambachen is 5–6 hours trek following Ghunsa khola valley and crossing Ghunsa kola to continue walking up the hill from the other side of the river. It is about 730-meter ascending from Ghunsa to reach Khambachen at 4145 meters.

Day 9

Khambachen-Lhonak 4790 meter

Now, it is already above the tree line hiking in small bush and grassland area from Khambachen, ascending 645 meters to Lhonak at 4790 meters. Estimated trek time is 4–5 hours, depending on walking peace at this height.

Day 10

Lhonak-Pangpema/Kanchenjunga north base camp 5140 meter-Lhonak 4790 meter

Lhonak to Pangpema (Kanchenjunga north base camp) is 5140 meters and the trek back to Lhonak is 6–8 hours round trip depending on the walk. Today’s hike is special to see the world’s third-highest mountain, Kanchenjunga, 8586 meters above sea level.

Day 11

Lhonak-Ghunsa village 3415 meter

Trek from Lhonak to Ghunsa is about 5-6 hours walking back same way passing Khambachen.

Day 12

Ghunsa-Selele 4200 meter

Ghunsa to Selele leads the new trek towards Kanchenjunga south base camp, walking through Rhodedendron forest gradually uphill ascending 785 meters. Selele is a small place at 4200 meters.

Day 13

Selele-Selele pass 4690 meter-Tseram 3868 meter

Today is quite long and difficult day trek from Selele to Tseram 3868 meter via Selele pass 4690 meters ascending about 650 meters and descending more than 850 meters. It takes 6-8 hours trek from selele to Tseram depending on trial condition specially in early spring due to snow covering in pass area and walking peace.

Day 14

Tseram-Ramachaur 4610 meter

Trek from Tseram to Ramachaur is mostly uphill ascending about 740 meters. Ramachaur is small place at 4610 meters.

Day 15

Ramachaur-Kanchenjunga south base camp-Torongden 2985 meter

The trip starts early in the morning by doing a short hike to Kanchenjunga south base camp and back to the tea house, then descends 1625 meters all the way down to Torongden. 2985 meters takes 6–8 hours.

Day 16

Torongden-Yamphuden 1800 meter

Torongden to Yamphuden is about 6–7 hours trek, ascending a few hundred meters to reach Lase dada and descending more than 1100 meters to reach Yamphuden at 1800 meters through mixed and Rhododendron Forest.

Day 17

Yamphuden-Birtamod 300 meter

It is quite long drive from yamphuden to Birtamod normally take 6-8 hours through some offroad with beautiful scenery.

Day 18

Birtamod-Bhadrapur-Kathmandu 1370 meter

Short drive to Bhadrapur airport as per your flight time and fly back to Kathmandu. it is about 45 minutes flight from Bhadrapur to Kathmandu.

Day 19

Back to home country

If your flight time is late afternoon or evening, you can visit some place in Kathmandu your own or if you need help, we can provide guide and vehicle on extra charge. Otherwise, be ready at hotel on time as per your flight details to catch international flight. A Representative from Guide for Nepal Pvt Ltd will arrange transportation and drop you in Tribhuvan international (TIA) airport and good bye for this time wishing safe journey back to home.

Hats off to Phurkel Sherpa, many thanks again to you for a wonderful ten days exploring Nepal. I was recommended Phurkel as a guide by a friend, and I'm so glad that I hired him. I explained my requirements and limitations (such as budget and location), and Phurkel tailored a trekking package for me. He gave me several options, and I settled on the Annapurna Circuit trek, which best suited my goals and budget. He picked me up and dropped me off from my hotels in Kathmandu before and after the trek. Phurkel even gave me tips and advice about where to go either side of the trek - thanks for the recommendation of Nagarkot, what an amazing place to acclimatise! From beginning to end, Phurkel was thoughtful, knowledgeable and generous. He always checked that I was alright physically and mentally, making sure that I stayed hydrated and well-fed. Despite our trek being in the off-season, his good relationships with the owners of hotels and teahouses meant we always had somewhere nice to stay and tasty meals to eat. So many good dal bhats! To top it off, Phurkel is deeply knowledgeable about his country, its people and its wildlife. I learned so much about Nepal's numerous ethnic groups, their ancient cultures and the amazing locations they live in. Phurkel is also an expert on local wildlife, particularly Nepal's many bird species. I often felt like I was in my very own nature documentary - he would make every effort to show me all the birds he spotted (he's a proper eagle eye!) More than anything, Phurkel is great company. I was a solo trekker, so we spent a lot of time together. He was always available to chat when I wanted to, and he thoughtfully answered my many, many questions. Perhaps most importantly, and one of the reasons I would like to call Phurkel a good friend, he made sure that I had the space to be private and alone when I needed it. Genuinely one of the best weeks I've ever had, from beginning to end!

I just got back from ACT about 1 week ago and this is my 1st hiking trip at Nepal. I loved every bit of this journey as Phurkel arrangement is really giving me an ease of mind. Firstly, his prepping for us prior to arriving in Nepal is so assuring. Secondly, once we landed at Kathmandu Airport, he managed the entire journey smoothly. Thirdly, he guide us on how to complete the hike successfully and more importantly "safely". Phurkel is also very knowledgeable about the history and geography of the land and always willing to share those infor. He is also well verse of the bird species. Last but not least, he is a FUN guy.. and you need this as you be spending many days with your guife. (can't imagine if my guide is a quiet person) In summary, definitely recommend Phurkel to anyone who want to explore the wonder of Nepal.
