Trip Overview

Upper Mustang Trekking is in the upper part of the Mustang district border with Dolpa district in the west and Tibet / China in the north. The main destination of the upper mustang trek is Lo Manthang, also popular as the walled city was the capital of upper Mustang while it was a separate kingdom. Upper Mustang opened for foreign trekkers in 1992 with a special permit of UDS 500 for the first ten days, but now the rules have been  changed, and the special permit cost is USD 50 per day. Upper Mustang trekking is rich in Buddhist culture with a language and lifestyle quite similar to Tibetan. Now, the king of Lo Manthang did not have any power when Nepal became a federal democratic republic in 2008.

Upper Mustang Trekking costs start from USD 2,115 to USD 2,985 per person depending on the number of pax booked and service included in the trek. Winter is normally snow-covered in most places and the best time to go upper Mustang trek is from March to the end of November. Upper Mustang is perfect for adventure trekkers, highland bird watching, and probably the best place to see a demoiselle crane during migration time. Trekking and birding tours in upper Mustang are one of the best trek and tour plans. The Tiji festival is the most important festival in Upper Mustang. They celebrate every year in May. Similarly, very old monasteries, beautiful landscapes, and snow-capped mountains are another attraction of upper Mustang.

Below is our day to day Itinerary of the Upper Mustang Trek 17 Days.

You will have a beautiful view of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges on this short flight. Jomsom airport is 2743 meters above sea level. We will meet our hiking staff in Jomsom and then start the trek to Kagbeni, following the Kaligandaki River valley for 10.6 km, taking roughly 3–4 hours. Kagbeni is 2804 meters above sea level.

Day 5

Kagbeni to Tsaile 3100 meter

After breakfast in the lodge, we had to show our mustang special trekking permit and Annapurna conservation receipt at the checkpoint, then enter the upper mustang, walking through the Kaligandaki River Valley all the way to Chhuksang, where we took to take a lunch break. From Chhuksang to Tsaile is just 1 hour’s trek, crossing the Kaligandak River. Kagbeni to Tsaile is approximately 15 km in trek distance and situated at 3100 meters from sea level. The total trek time from Kagbeni to Tsaile is about 5–6 hours.

The hiking time from Dhakmar to Lo Manthang is 5–7 hours depending on walking peace ascending 478 meters and descending 488 meters.

Day 9

Exploration Day 3810 meter

There are a lot of interesting places to visit around Lo Manthang. Today’s program tried to cover the most important places by going to Choser cave, explore a few monasteries around before lunch and drive back to Lo Manthang for lunch and visit three important monasteries inside the walled city and look round if you have more time in the afternoon.

Day 10

Lo-Manthang to Yara village 3650 meter

Lo Manthang to Yara village, 3650 meters, is a 17 km trek via Dhi Gaun, which is the only option for a lunch break. After lunch at Dhi Gaun, cross the Kali Gandaki River and follow Pu Yung Khola up to Yara village 3650 meters. Lo Manthang to Yara village is a 6–7-hour trek, ascending and descending a few hundred meters.

Day 11

Yara village to Tange village 3240 meter

Yara to Tange is a 17.4 km hiking distance, walking some flat, some uphill and some downhill, crossing dheyi khola. Day 12

Tange to Chhusang 3040 meter

Tange to Chhusang is really the biggest day on the upper Mustang trek because there is nothing between Tange and the Chhusang hiking trail. Tange to Chhusang is approximately 23 km via hiking trail, roughly 8-10 hours trek, about 1000 meters ascent and 1200 meters descent to Chhusang 3040 meters. You can visit Muktinath temple on the way or early tomorrow morning if you have enough time before starting the trek.

Day 14

Muktinath to Jomsom 2720 meter

There is a jeep and bus service from Mukthinath to Jomsom, 2720 meters. If you feel tired and bored, walk the last-day trek to Jomsom. You might need to pay yourself for this option if you use it. Muktinath to Jomsom is 21 km, descending almost 1100 meters, which normally takes 4–6 hours walking through the Kali Gandaki River valley. It is your last day of the upper mustang trek with your guide and porter. So, if you want, you can offer them dinner and a good celebration.

Day 15

Jomsom to Pokhara flights operate from early morning because after 10 am it is quite strong windy each day. So, most of the flights are before 10 am. The Jomsom to Pokhara flight offers you magnificent views of the Annapurna range on your left side and Dhaulagiri range on your right side. The Jomsom to Pokhara flight is just 25 minutes and the whole afternoon is free to take a rest or explore the lakeside, Pokhara.

Had an amazing experience of the “Everest View Trek” with Phurkel! Organised and down-to-earth. Ensuring everything ran smoothly from start to finish and always making sure everyone was well taken cared of. His relaxed nature and patience (with our endless questions), along with his insightful sharing about the trails, wildlife and local culture, made the trek stress-free and more “bearable”. 😆 I would highly recommend Phurkel if you’re looking for a trustworthy, knowledgeable and professional guide!

Hats off to Phurkel Sherpa, many thanks again to you for a wonderful ten days exploring Nepal. I was recommended Phurkel as a guide by a friend, and I'm so glad that I hired him. I explained my requirements and limitations (such as budget and location), and Phurkel tailored a trekking package for me. He gave me several options, and I settled on the Annapurna Circuit trek, which best suited my goals and budget. He picked me up and dropped me off from my hotels in Kathmandu before and after the trek. Phurkel even gave me tips and advice about where to go either side of the trek - thanks for the recommendation of Nagarkot, what an amazing place to acclimatise! From beginning to end, Phurkel was thoughtful, knowledgeable and generous. He always checked that I was alright physically and mentally, making sure that I stayed hydrated and well-fed. Despite our trek being in the off-season, his good relationships with the owners of hotels and teahouses meant we always had somewhere nice to stay and tasty meals to eat. So many good dal bhats! To top it off, Phurkel is deeply knowledgeable about his country, its people and its wildlife. I learned so much about Nepal's numerous ethnic groups, their ancient cultures and the amazing locations they live in. Phurkel is also an expert on local wildlife, particularly Nepal's many bird species. I often felt like I was in my very own nature documentary - he would make every effort to show me all the birds he spotted (he's a proper eagle eye!) More than anything, Phurkel is great company. I was a solo trekker, so we spent a lot of time together. He was always available to chat when I wanted to, and he thoughtfully answered my many, many questions. Perhaps most importantly, and one of the reasons I would like to call Phurkel a good friend, he made sure that I had the space to be private and alone when I needed it. Genuinely one of the best weeks I've ever had, from beginning to end!

I just got back from ACT about 1 week ago and this is my 1st hiking trip at Nepal. I loved every bit of this journey as Phurkel arrangement is really giving me an ease of mind. Firstly, his prepping for us prior to arriving in Nepal is so assuring. Secondly, once we landed at Kathmandu Airport, he managed the entire journey smoothly. Thirdly, he guide us on how to complete the hike successfully and more importantly "safely". Phurkel is also very knowledgeable about the history and geography of the land and always willing to share those infor. He is also well verse of the bird species. Last but not least, he is a FUN guy.. and you need this as you be spending many days with your guife. (can't imagine if my guide is a quiet person) In summary, definitely recommend Phurkel to anyone who want to explore the wonder of Nepal.
