Trip Overview

Shailung is the highest hill in the hilly region of Nepal, situated at 3145 meters above sea level on the border of Dolakha and Ramechhap districts and According to Tamang language, shailung means a hundred hills. because There are a hundred of small hills above the tree line in Shailung looking really amazing views with different colors in all four seasons.

In the winter season, all hundred hills will be mostly snow covered and the nearest popular places to see and play fresh snow from Kathmandu. The spring season is more colorful with Rhododendron flowers around the area, the monsoon season will be dramatically cloudy and full of greenery, Autumn season specially October to December is mostly open weather.

So, Shailung is one of the best places for 360-degree view including Everest region mountain range in the east to Manaslu and Annapurna range in the west. similarly, Gaurishankar and Jugal himal range are the nearest mountain range from Shailung.

Beside this, shailung is a very important place for religious purposes for both Hindus and Buddhists. Shailungeswor mahadev Temple, a natural rock door, where locals believe to go through to check their luck, print of a sword on the rock, a lot of old Chorten, the footprint of Guru Rimpoche (Guru Padmasambhava) and a big stupa on top of sailung is showing itself how important place is Shailung.

Similarly, Shaman people or jhakri/dhami believe that Shailung is a very powerful holy place with shailungeswor Mahadev, Juredhunga Mahadev and the whole area in Shailung itself is full of invisible natural power.

Locals believe that A long ago, some saints have done meditation in shailung and Guru Padmasambhava has spent some time doing meditation and left his footprint while he was travelling to Tibet.

Shamanism is still very popular in Nepal and a lot of people from hilly regions still practice and believe in shamanism. Every year during the Janai purnima or full moon of August is like an important annual event or festival for shaman that hundreds of shamans with their disciples visit Shailung to prove and practice natural power.

Besides, Shailung, Kalinchowk, Gosaikunda, Panchpokhari and many other places in the hilly region will be very crowded during Jana purnima or the full moon of August.

There are two different road access to reach Sailung following Kathmandu-Nepalthok-Doramba-Kholakharka, approximately 160km driving 6–7 hours and another shorter access is Kathmandu-Dhulikhel-Khadichaur-Mude-Kalapani, approximately 123 km driving 4–5 hours by private vehicle and More than 80% of the road to Kalapani is already black toped even though it is quite narrow.

Anytime between October and May, it is good to visit Shailung. But if you want to see and play fresh snow, then January – February – March is better and August fulmoon time is special for the shamanism festival.

Had an amazing experience of the “Everest View Trek” with Phurkel! Organised and down-to-earth. Ensuring everything ran smoothly from start to finish and always making sure everyone was well taken cared of. His relaxed nature and patience (with our endless questions), along with his insightful sharing about the trails, wildlife and local culture, made the trek stress-free and more “bearable”. 😆 I would highly recommend Phurkel if you’re looking for a trustworthy, knowledgeable and professional guide!

Hats off to Phurkel Sherpa, many thanks again to you for a wonderful ten days exploring Nepal. I was recommended Phurkel as a guide by a friend, and I'm so glad that I hired him. I explained my requirements and limitations (such as budget and location), and Phurkel tailored a trekking package for me. He gave me several options, and I settled on the Annapurna Circuit trek, which best suited my goals and budget. He picked me up and dropped me off from my hotels in Kathmandu before and after the trek. Phurkel even gave me tips and advice about where to go either side of the trek - thanks for the recommendation of Nagarkot, what an amazing place to acclimatise! From beginning to end, Phurkel was thoughtful, knowledgeable and generous. He always checked that I was alright physically and mentally, making sure that I stayed hydrated and well-fed. Despite our trek being in the off-season, his good relationships with the owners of hotels and teahouses meant we always had somewhere nice to stay and tasty meals to eat. So many good dal bhats! To top it off, Phurkel is deeply knowledgeable about his country, its people and its wildlife. I learned so much about Nepal's numerous ethnic groups, their ancient cultures and the amazing locations they live in. Phurkel is also an expert on local wildlife, particularly Nepal's many bird species. I often felt like I was in my very own nature documentary - he would make every effort to show me all the birds he spotted (he's a proper eagle eye!) More than anything, Phurkel is great company. I was a solo trekker, so we spent a lot of time together. He was always available to chat when I wanted to, and he thoughtfully answered my many, many questions. Perhaps most importantly, and one of the reasons I would like to call Phurkel a good friend, he made sure that I had the space to be private and alone when I needed it. Genuinely one of the best weeks I've ever had, from beginning to end!

I just got back from ACT about 1 week ago and this is my 1st hiking trip at Nepal. I loved every bit of this journey as Phurkel arrangement is really giving me an ease of mind. Firstly, his prepping for us prior to arriving in Nepal is so assuring. Secondly, once we landed at Kathmandu Airport, he managed the entire journey smoothly. Thirdly, he guide us on how to complete the hike successfully and more importantly "safely". Phurkel is also very knowledgeable about the history and geography of the land and always willing to share those infor. He is also well verse of the bird species. Last but not least, he is a FUN guy.. and you need this as you be spending many days with your guife. (can't imagine if my guide is a quiet person) In summary, definitely recommend Phurkel to anyone who want to explore the wonder of Nepal.
