Trip Overview

Kanchenjunga base camp trek is still a less tourist visited destination and lies in the eastern part of the Nepal border with India and China. this massive Kanchenjunga is the world’s third-highest mountain at 8586 meters high from sea level that you can witness to touch base camp at 5140 meters on this trip.

Kanchenjunga north base camp is inside the Kanchenjunga conservation area, which is very rich in biodiversity, flowers and fauna; Rai, Limbs, Sherpa culture and Buddhist religions. similarly, Kanchenjunga conservation area is popular for snow leopard, blue ship, Himalayan red fox and many different species of birds.

The Kanchenjunga trek starts by flying from Kathmandu to Bhadrapur airport and jeep drive to Sekathum. Then the official trek starts from Sekathum towards Kanchenjunga north base camp following Ghunsa Khola, walking through subtropical forest up to Nival zone to reach base camp.

Kanchenjunga trek cost is USD1500 to 3120 per person including Kathmandu - Bhadrapur - Kathmandu domestic flights, Bhadrapur-Taplejung-Sekathum-Birtamod private jeep, Kanchenjunga restricted permit, KCA fee, TIMS, accommodation and foods, guide and porter during the trek.

 

Below is our day to day Itinerary of the Kanchenjunga Trek 16 Days.

Itineraries

Day 01

Arrival in Kathmandu

A representative from Guide for Nepal Pvt Ltd will heartily welcome to you in Tribhuvan international (TIA) airport 1370 meter from sea level in any time of your arrival and help you transfer to hotel at Thamel. Kathmandu is capital city of Nepal and it is normally busy during the day. It is about 15-25 minutes’ drive from airport to Thamel. It depends on your arrival time and traffic. You might have short time to visit some place in Kathmandu and final preparation for Trip from next day.

Day 02

Kathmandu to Phidim

The Kathmandu to Bahadur flight starts from around 8–9 am and it takes about 45 minutes. Then Bahadur to Phidim is another 5–6-hour drive by local private jeep.

Day 3

Phidim-Taplejung-Sekathum 1650m

Phidim to Sekathum is almost 7–8 hours away and some off-road drive. It depends on local rules and the current situation there in Taplejung that sometime we can take the same jeep direct or need to change another jeep from Taplejung to Sekathum, the small place Sekathum is located at 1650 meters above sea level on the river bank of Ghunsa Kola.

Day 4

Sekathum - Amjilasa 2490m

Sekathum to Amjilasa is about 4–5 hours trek gradually and some step uphill walking through some mixed forest following Ghunsaa Khola, ascending almost 840 meters. Amjilasa is a small village situated at 2490 meters above sea level on a hillside on the way to Kanchenjunga trail.

Day 5

Amjilasa - Gyabla 2725m

Amjilasa to Gyabla is quite a short- and easy-day trek, ascending a few hundred meters gradually uphill, some normal flat and some uphill walking through hillside near Ghunsa kola. Gyabla is situated at 2725 meters.

Day 6

Gyabla-Ghunsa village 3415m

Gyabla to Ghunsa village is an extremely beautiful hike, passing some mixed forest including pine trees and Rhododendron flowers which bloom during spring. Fole gaun is a small village on the way where is the best time to have a lunch break, then trek a few hours more to reach Ghunsa village at 3415 meters. Ghunsa village is the last biggest village in Kanchenjunga north base camp trek.

Day 7

Acclimatization day

Explore Ghunsa village and make few hours hike nearby before lunch and take a rest.

Day 8

Ghunsa-Khambachen 4145m

The trek from Ghunsa to Khambachen is 5–6 hours trek following Ghunsa khola valley and crossing Ghunsa kola to continue walking up the hill from the other side of the river. It is about 730-meter ascending from Ghunsa to reach Khambachen at 4145 meters.

Day 9

Khambachen-Lhonak

Now, it is already above the tree line hiking in small bush and grassland area from Khambachen, ascending 645 meters to Lhonak at 4790 meters. Estimated trek time is 4–5 hours, depending on walking peace at this height.

Day 10

Lhonak-Pangpema/base camp-Lhonak

Lhonak to Pangpema (Kanchenjunga north base camp) is 5140 meters and the trek back to Lhonak is 6–8 hours round trip depending on the walk. Today’s hike is special to see the world’s third-highest mountain, Kanchenjunga, 8586 meters above sea level.

Day 11

Lhanak-Ghunsa 3415m

Trek from Lhonak to Ghunsa is about 5-6 hours walking back same way passing Khambachen.

Day 12

Ghunsa-Amjilasa 2490m

Trek down from Ghunsa village to Amjilasa via Fole Gaun and Gyabla descending 925 meters.

Day 13

Amjilasa-Sekathum-Taplejung 1440m

Today is last day of trek from Amjilasa to Sekathum descending almost 840 meters and local jeep drive from Sekathum to Taplejung for another few hours.

Day 14

Taplejung-Birtamod 300m

It is about 6-7 hours drive from Taplejung to Bitamod via Ilam Tea Garden.

Day 15

Birtamod-Bhadrapur-Kathmandu 1370m

Just short drive from Birtamod to Bhadrapur airport then 45 minutes fly to Kathmandu.

Day 16

Back to home

If your flight time is late afternoon or evening, you can visit some place in Kathmandu your own or if you need help, we can provide guide and vehicle on extra charge. Otherwise, be ready at hotel on time as per your flight details to catch international flight. A Representative from Guide for Nepal Pvt Ltd will arrange transportation and drop you in Tribhuvan international (TIA) airport and good bye for this time wishing safe journey back to home.

Kanchenjunga base camp is 5140 meters high from sea level

Normally, a 5-7 hour walks every day on a trek.

March to May and October to December is the best time to go Kanchenjunga trek

Useful Information:

  • Read about area where you are trekking soon.

  • Read about culture, religion.
  • Make sure are you physically fit for trek/tour.
  • Double check all the trekking equipment before you start trek.
  • Make sure all gadget is ready/full charged and well dress before start birding tour.
