Trip Overview

The Manaslu birding trek lies in the north-west of Kathmandu.  Total 892 species of birds is recorded in Nepal. among them 201 species of birds has recorded in Manaslu conservation area. We can explore many different species of seasonal visitor and local residency birds in different seasons. March to May in spring season and September to November in autumn season are the best times to birding in Manaslu conservation area.

Manaslu Birding Trek cost start from USD 1545 to USD 1785 per person depending on the season and numbers of pax booked. Manaslu bird watching trek costs normally, includes a Manaslu special trekking permit, Manaslu conservation fee, Annapurna conservation fee, trekking permit, local transportation, bird watching guide cost, porter cost, foods, accommodation and some other services as per the price charged.

Itineraries

Day 01

Arrival in Kathmandu

A representative from Guide for Nepal Pvt Ltd will heartily welcome to you in Tribhuvan international (TIA) airport 1370 meter from sea level in any time of your arrival and help you transfer to hotel at Thamel. Kathmandu is capital city of Nepal and it is normally busy during the day. It is about 15-25 minutes’ drive from airport to Thamel. It depends on your arrival time and traffic. You might have short time to visit some place in Kathmandu and final preparation for Trip from next day.

Day 02

Sightseeing in Kathmandu

Today is preparation for the Manaslu circuit trek, especially because we have submitted a Nepal visa with an original passport to the immigration office to get a Manaslu special permit. You can do half-day birding phulchoki and prepare for the trek.

Day 3

Kathmandu to Machha Khola

Be ready with all the necessary equipment for your Manaslu circuit birding trek, and you can store extra things in the hotel which you can collect after the trek. Your guide, porter and jeep will be in your hotel at the mentioned time, and you can start your journey. Kathmandu to Machhakhola is about 160 kilometers in road distance, and it takes about 7–9 hours depending on road conditions and traffic. Machhakhola is situated at 870 meters near budhigandaki river bank in Gorkha district. Machhakhola is quite a small place just 4–5 lodges and a few local shops. There is a chance to see and quick picture of some bird species on the way while you are traveling by private jeep.

Day 4

Machha Khola to Jagat

Be ready with your back-pack for breakfast. The birding trek starts right after breakfast, crossing the first suspension bridge on the Manaslu circuit trek and continuing towards Khorlabesi – Tatopani – Dovan following the budhigandaki river. The trek still continues, some gradually and some uphill, and stops for a lunch break at a suitable time on the way, then continues to Jagat village. Machhakhola to Jagat village is about 6–8 hours depending on walking peace. Jagat village is at 1340 meters from sea level, and it is a 470-meter ascent from Machhakhola. Machhakhola to Jagat is an approximately 18-kilometer trek. Between Manchhakhola and Jagat you will see some forest birds and some common birds.

Day 5

Jagat to Deng

Take breakfast and be ready as planned. The bird tree starts after checking into the Manaslu conservation post and the police check the post where they check all permits. After checking all the documents, the trek continued towards Salle – Philim – Chisopani -nak phedi – pewa and Deng 1860 meters, just crossing budhigandaki river a few times and following up. Jagat to Deng is roughly 6–8 hours depending on walking speed. Deng is a small place with only 2–3 lodges. Jagat to Deng is about 520 meters ascent and Jagat to Deng is approximately 18.5kilometers. Today, there is a chance for forest and common birds as well.

Day 6

Deng to Namrung

The Deng to Namrung trail is quite a narrow step uphill, walking along the Budhi Gandaki River, crossing bridge a few times, passing Bhi and Gap village. Gap is a better place to stop for lunch. After lunch, the trek continues gradual uphill walking through some mixed forest all the way to Namrung village 2630m. Deng to Namrung is approximately 17 km. ascending 800 meters and takes about 6–7 hours.

Day 7

Namrung to Lho Village

After a hot and nice breakfast, as on a normal day, a birding trek starts with easy walking almost in level and some steps uphill and continues towards Lho village, passing Lhi, where you might take a tea break and enjoy the view. Trek still gradually uphill all the way to Lho village, 3180 meters from sea level. Namrunng to Lho village is almost 10 km far in trek distance ascending 550 meters. You might have a nice birding trek on the way and when you reach Lho you can do some birding around.

Day 8

Lho village to Sama Gaun

Today is an easy and short-day trek from Lho village to Sama Gaun, passing Syala village where you might have an early tea break and enjoy a closer view of Manaslu from better angles. Lho village to Sama gaun is approximately 8 km, ascending 340 meters in about 4 hours. Sama gaun is about 3520 meters high from sea level. You can take some time on the way and do birding around Sama Gaun in the afternoon.

Day 9

Acclimatization day at Sama Gaun

Today is your acclimatization day. You can have your breakfast even later than usual if you are taking an easy day birding around the village. The best place for a short birding hike is to just walk up to Birendra Lake and back to the lodge for lunch and a birding hike around the village and rest. Listen and keep your body warm, drink and eat properly, stay hydrated. If you have any problems or AMS symptoms, share them with your friends or guide. Don’t hide problem and continue.

Day 10

Sama Gaun to Samdo

Sama gaun to Samdo is another short and easy day, walking almost flat and very slowly uphill in some places. Anyway, take breakfast and be ready at a regular time due to better weather in the morning than in the afternoon. You will reach Samdo at lunchtime. So, you can do a short hike near Samdo or take a rest. Sama gaun to Samdo is about 8 km, and it takes 3–4 hours and just a few hundred meters to ascend. Samdo village is situated at 3800 meters from sea level. Take time and enjoy the birding hike to Samdo. Listen and keep your body warm, drink and eat properly, stay hydrated. If you have any problems or AMS symptoms, share them with your friends or guide. Don’t hide problems and continue.

Day 11

Samdo to Dharmasala

Samdo to Dharmasala is the shortest day trek in Manaslu circuit just 6 km in trekking distance takes 2–3 hours and gradually ascends 660 meters. Dharmasala is located at 4460 meters from sea level and there are only three small lodges and each lodge has a two-man tent for accommodation. Dharmasala is also popular as larke pass phedi. You might have a chance to see ground birds like finch, accentor, snowcock and winter wren. Listen and keep your body warm, drink and eat properly, stay hydrated. If you have any problems or AMS symptoms, share them with your friends or guide. Don’t hide problems and continue.

Day 12

Dharmasala -Larke Pass - Bhimthang

Today is the biggest day on the Manaslu circuit trek. Be ready at the mentioned time with a bag pack and all necessary equipment. Eat a hot breakfast, carry a chocolate bar/energy bar and take enough water. The trek starts as soon as breakfast in the very early morning and continues gradually uphill all the way to Larke pass 5106 meters from sea level. Dharmasala to Larke Pass is about a 7 km trek that normally requires 3–5 hours as per walking pace ascending 650 meters. Larke pass to Bhimthang is all the way About 1386 meters descending takes 3–5 hours as per different peace to complete almost 9 km. The average distance from Dharmasala to Bhimthang is 15.5 km. Bhimthang is situated at 3720 meters above sea level in Manang district, one of the best places on the Manaslu circuit trek. There are chances for snow Patridge, snow cock and some other highland birds.

Day 13

Bhimthang to Goa

Just be ready at the mentioned time for breakfast even if you feel a bit tired from yesterday’s long walk. The trek starts by walking downhill from the starting point almost all the way to Goa, passing some mixed forest and taking a lunch break in surkikhola. Goa is a small village situated at an altitude of 2520 meters from sea level. Bhimthang to Goa is approximately 13 km almost 1200-meter descent in 5–7 hours. Good day to record some forest birds.

Day 14

Goa - Dharapani - Besisahar

Today is the last day of the Manaslu circuit trek. You can start just after breakfast as usual and trek to Dharapani 1860 meters descending 660 meters. From Dharapani, the guide will arrange a local private jeep and drive to Besisahar 760 meters. Dharapani to Besisahar is about 43 km in road distance need 2–3 hours due to the narrow off-road. You might have a good celebration and happy dinner with all the hiking crew after the successful Manaslu circuit trek. There is a chance for good sightings of forest and common birds from Goa to Dharapani and there might be some chance in a jeep drive to Besisahar.

Day 15

Besisahar to Kathmandu

Besisahar to Kathmandu is 175 km via the Dumre-Besisahar and Prithivi highways normally takes 5–6 hours by private car, jeep, and bus. It depends on road conditions and traffic. Anyway, it is better to start early in the morning after your breakfast in the lodge, and you can have a short break a few times on the road wherever is possible. You might have some chance to see and take quick photographs during your jeep from Besisahar to Kathmandu.

Day 16

Back to home

If your flight time is late afternoon or evening, you can do some bird watching in Kathmandu. If yes, we can provide a bird-watching guide and a vehicle for an extra charge. Otherwise, be ready at the hotel on time as per your flight details to catch an international flight. A representative from Guide for Nepal Pvt Ltd will arrange transportation and drop you off at Tribhuvan International (TIA) airport and goodbye for this time wishing you a safe journey back home.
