Trip Overview

Langtang National Park is probably the best place for birding tours and trekking in Nepal. Langtang National Park was established in 1976 and covers an area of 1710 sq. Km lies in the north of Kathmandu. It is about a 122 km drive to Syabrubesi along the Trisuli river, where you might have a chance to see Ibis bills in the winter. Ibis bill spend the spring and moon season near Kyanjin Gumba in Langtang valley. The Langtang Valley birding tour and trek offer you a big chance to see the Himalayan monal (national bird of Nepal), Tibetan snow cock, snow partridge, Ibis bill, different types of laughing thrushes, woodpeckers, sunbirds, bulbuls, minivets, snow pigeon, alpine cough, red-bill cough, tits, tree creepers, warblers. Itineraries

Day 01

Arrival in Kathmandu

A representative from Guide for Nepal Pvt Ltd will heartly welcome to you in Tribhuvan international (TIA) airport 1370 meter from sea level in any time of your arrival and help you transfer to hotel at Thamel. Kathmandu is capital city of Nepal and it is normally busy during the day. It is about 15-25 minutes’ drive from airport to Thamel. It depends on your arrival time and traffic. You might have some time to explore Thamel or visit some important place in Kathmandu city and final preparation for Trekking from next day.

Day 02

Kathmandu to Syabrubesi

Take breakfast in your hotel and be ready with your birding and trekking gear and all the other necessary equipment for a birding trek. If you have some extra luggage, you can store it in the hotel and receive it after the trek. The guide, porter and jeep will arrive at your hotel at the mentioned time, then you start your journey to Syabrubesi 1530 meters. Kathmandu to Syabrusei is approximately 122 km and Kathmandu to Syabrusei is about 6 hours’ drive from Kathmandu. You will have a chance to see some bird species during your jeep drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi.

Day 3

Syabrubesi to Rimche

After breakfast in the lodge, the birding trek starts gradually uphill, following the Langtang Khola/river, passing Pairo hotel. After that, the trek gradually goes uphill, following Langtang khola throws mixed forest to bamboo. It might be the best spot for a lunch break, then trek continue uphill till rimche 2400 meters. Syabrubesi to Rimche is roughly 5–7 hours, ascending 870 meters. Today there are a lot of chances to see many different species of forest birds and few water birds.

Day 4

Rimche to Thangsyap village

After breakfast, as usual, the birding trek starts from Rimche gradually uphill, following Langtang Khola/river throws mixed forest all the way to Ghodatabela and then Thangsyap village, 3140 meters. There will already be good views of Langtang Lirung and some other peaks before we reach Ghodatabela. March-April will be more colorful with rhododendron flowers in this area. The average time from Romche to Thangsyap village is 6–7 hours and about 740 meters ascents. Today is also a great day to see different species of forest birds and especially the Himalayan monal, the national bird of Nepal.

Day 5

Thangsyap village to Kyanjin Gumba

Thangsyap village to Kyanjin Gumba is quite an easy gradually uphill, enjoying the mountain scenery and highland birds like finches, accentors, vultures and many more other birds. Thangsyap to Kyanjin Gumba is just a 4-5-hour walk and about a 730-meter ascent. Kyanjin gumba is at an altitude of 3870 meters from sea level and Kyanjin gumba is the last tea house in Langtang valley. You might have some time to do birding and photography around kyanjin gumba in the afternoon.

Day 6

Exploration day

There is an option either you can just do birding around Kyanjin Gumba, enjoy the view or climb Kyanjin Ri peak, 4773 meters from sea level, about 4–5 hours round trip for birding and especially for the best view as well. After lunch, you can just go birding around or go to explore ibis bills if you are in spring. Ibis bills spend the spring and summer seasons in the Kyanjin valley and come down in the lower valley in winter and autumn.

Day 7

Kyanjin Gumba to Thangsyap

Kyanjin gumaba to Thangsyap is about a 4-5-hour birding trek and the way downhill descending 730 metres. It is mostly easy downhill. You can take more time on the way and when you arrive in Thangsyap, try to explore the surrounding Himalayas.

Day 8

Thangsyap to Rimche

Take breakfast and start a birding trek from Thangsyap, giving more time at each step. It is easier walking downhill compared to going up from Rimche to Thangsyap. Today is a better chance to explore more species. Thangsyap to Rimche is probably the best birding site in the Langtang valley. It is about a 740-meter descent from Thangsyap to Rimche.

Day 9

Rimche to Thulo Syabru village

After breakfast, the birding trek starts the same way, descending to Pairo hotel, then climbing uphill through bamboo and other mixed forest, crossing a suspension bridge and continuing uphill all the way to Syabru village, 2210 meters. Rimche to thulo Syabru is almost 700 meters descending and 500 meters ascending. The average time from Rimche to Thulo Syabru is 5–6 hours. Today is also a better day for forest birds and some common birds.

Day 10

Thulo Syabru to Kathmandu

Take breakfast and be ready at the mentioned time, then go back to Kathmandu by private jeep. Thulo Syabru to Kathmandu is about 110 km and approximately driving time is 6–7 hours, driving on the Pasang lhamu highway through Trisuli bazar. Sometimes we need to walk about an hour to catch a jeep on the main road, where we have a chance to do birding as well. Take a quick and short opportunity to take photographs or record on the way if you see some bird species.

Day 11

Back to home

If your flight time is late afternoon or evening, you can do half-day birding in Phulchoki and Godawori forest. We can provide a guide and vehicle at an extra charge. Otherwise, be ready at the hotel on time as per your flight details to catch an international flight. A representative from Guide for Nepal Pvt Ltd will arrange transportation and drop you off at Tribhuvan International (TIA) airport and goodbye to this time, wishing you a safe journey back home.

The highest altitude on the Langtang trek is 4500 meters.

Normally, 5-7 hours walk every day in trek.
